Information

Situated in Cedar Street Thomastown, the school was officially opened on 4th March 1966. For the first term, students were originally transported up to Epping Primary School whilst the finishing touches of the school were being undertaken.

Over the years, the school has been committed to maintaining a high standard of facilities and this has been demonstrated by ongoing infrastructure and maintenance work.

In 1994 Thomastown East Primary School had a major overhaul and spent $320,000 on upgrading facilities. In 2006 a further $150,000 was spent on maintenance and upgrading of the toilet blocks and surrounding areas.

In 2011, a major reconstruction of the classrooms was undertaken at a cost of $925,000 to ensure the facilities were state of the art and allowed every possible learning opportunity for all students who attended.

In 2014, a further $250,000 is being spent on painting, recarpenting, lighting and decorating Building Two. Whilst the school is small and family orientated, it offers facilities equal to any school in the area and is committed to being a state of the art learning facility for the third millennium.

Thomastown East Primary School is located in the northern suburbs of Melbourne near the Dalton Road exit of the Western Ring Road. It has a current enrolment of 150 students. A smaller school population contributes towards a harmonious, family orientated and caring atmosphere which allows staff to provide personalised attention to the students.

Thomastown East Primary School initially opened in 1965 with an enrolment of 267 students. In recent years it has fluctuated between 135-150 students.

The school has a focus on Academic Gain and undertakes a writing Festival each year to highlight the fabulously creative work of each child within the school. The staff, students and community at Thomastown East Primary School are proud of our achievements.

We are a friendly and welcoming school which offers all the opportunities of a larger school in a more personal, friendly and boutique like setting.

Sunsmart Policy

Thomastown East Primary School has a "Sun Smart" policy which stipulates that all children must wear a broad brimmed hat or legionnaires school hat outside at all times from the beginning of September to the end of April.

The school enforces a “no hat, no play” policy.

The school runs an assembly each Friday afternoon from 2:45pm – 3:05pm.
As part of our Assembly children say the school oath and sing the National Anthem.
We celebrate the outstanding work the children have undertaken during the week and have reports back from our Young Leaders and Sports Captains about events that have occurred. A summary of upcoming events and awards are given out.
All parents and family members are welcome to attend Assembly.
Thomastown East Primary Schools oath is as follows:

As we stand together, the flag reminds us that Australia is our home. We must do what we can to make our country fair and peaceful for everyone. We respect our friends, parents, teachers and all members of our community, and will work together to make Thomastown East a happy place.

Schooling is compulsory for children and young people aged from 6 – 17 years.
Daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives.
It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

Students are expected to attend the school in which they are enrolled, during normal school hours every day of each term, unless:

  • Illness prevents them attending
  • There is an approved exemption from school attendance for the student

A note needs to be supplied everyday a child does not attend school.

Homework is an opportunity for you to be involved in your child’s education.

Along with your child’s teacher, you can help encourage your child to form good homework patterns early on in primary school.

Your child’s teacher will usually tell you about the homework expectations at the start of the year at the ‘Meet the Teachers’ session and give you a copy of the school’s homework policy.

Children are expected to read 15 minutes each night (alone or with a parent) and practice their spelling words or their times tables (based on age and classroom expectations).

Please feel free to download the following document to see how you can support your child at home.
